Description: "General Lee, born in Clermont, Fairfax County, Va., November 19th, 1835, was graduated at the United States Military Academy in 1856, and commissioned second lieutenant in the Second Cavalry. At the beginning of the Civil War in 1861 he resigned his commission and entered on Confederate service. He was placed on staff duty, and was adjutant general of Ewell's Brigade until September, 1861, when he was made lieutenant colonel of First Virginia Cavalry, and later was promoted colonel, and he participated in all the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia. On July 25th, 1862, he was made brigadier general, and on the 3rd of September, 1863, major general. In March, 1865, he was put in command of the whole cavalry corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, and a month later he surrendered to General Meade at Farmville."— Frank Leslie, 1896
