Description: "The Charter Oak. In Hartford the colonial government met to deliver up the charter. It was evening, and the charter lay on the table. Suddenly the candles were blown out. When they were relighted, the character had disappeared. One of the members had it carried it off; and the story is that he hid it in the hollow trunk of the oak which long stood, and bore the name of the Charter Oak."—Scudder, 1897
