Description: The Seventeen Year Locust (Cicada septendecim) spends seventeen years underground feeding on the roots of trees. On the seventeenth year of its life it burrows out of the ground, cracks its shell and spreads its previously unused wings. It flies to the nearest tree to mate. The female cuts holes in the branches of the tree to deposit her eggs. The males make a very loud drumming noise while they are above ground.
