The Newport Tower (also known as: Round Tower, Touro Tower, Newport Stone Tower and Old Stone Mill) is a round stone tower located in Touro Park in Newport, Rhode Island (USA).

It is commonly considered to have been a windmill built in the mid-17th century. However, the tower has received attention due to speculation that it is actually several centuries older and would then represent evidence of pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact. In the far background is a church. A man s leaning against one of the pillars and a cat is standing between two of them.

A windmill is a machine that is powered by the energy of the wind. It is designed to convert the energy of the wind into more useful forms using rotating blades or sails. The term also refers to the structure it is commonly built on. In much of Europe, windmills served originally to grind grain, though later applications included pumping water and, more recently, generation of electricity.

Fixed windmills, oriented to the prevailing wind were extensively used in the Cyclades islands of Greece. The economies of power and transport allowed the use of these 'offshore' mills for grinding grain transported from the mainland and flour returned. A 1/10th share of the flour was paid to the miller in return for his service. This type would mount triangular sails when in operation.

"Make a toy windmill as follows: take a square piece of strong, stiff, writing paper and from each corner cut inward nearly to the cener, making eight points. Bend four alternate points over the center and pass a pin through them and the center into the end of a wooden handle. A mere breath will make this turn round the pin as an axis."

This windmill is a machine which converts the energy of wind to rotational motion by means of adjustable sails. The main use is as a grinding mill powered by the wind, reducing a solid or coarse substance into pump or minute grains, by crushing, grinding, or pressing. Windmills have also provided energy for obtaining fresh water from underground or drainage.
