A scene from the story, <em>How Fritz Learned To Spell "Cane"</em>. Fritz was a lazy doggie. He never studied in school, but spent his time making ugly pictures of his teacher. One day Professor Barker asked: "Fritz, what does c-a-t-s spell?" "Don't know." "Then pronounce r-u-n." "Can't." "Do you know what a c-a-n-e is?" "No; don't think I ever saw one." "Then you shall feel one right now," said the Professor, and he gave Fritz a whipping with his cane. Now Fritz can spell at least one word.

The college was founded in 1870 by Irish immigrant and social reformer Thomas Hunter as a teacher-training school for young woman. The school, which was housed in an armory and saddle store at Broadway and East Fourth Street in Manhattan, was open to all qualified women, irrespective of race, religion or ethnic background, which was incongruent to the prevailing admission practices of other schools during this era. Created by the New York State Legislature, Hunter was deemed the only approved institution for those seeking to teach in New York City during this time. The school incorporated an elementary and high school for gifted children, where students practiced teaching.

Andrew Dickson White (November 7, 1832 – November 4, 1918) was a U.S. diplomat, author, and educator, best known as the co-founder of Cornell University. In 1869 White gave a lecture on "The Battle-Fields of Science", arguing that history showed the negative outcomes resulting from any attempt on the part of religion to interfere with the progress of science. Over the next 30 years he refined his analysis, expanding his case studies to include nearly every field of science over the entire history of Christianity, but also narrowing his target from "religion" through "ecclesiasticism" to "dogmatic theology."
