A Vertical Sheave and Toothed Cogs

A Vertical Sheave and Toothed Cogs

This vertical sheave, and the toothed cogs, are part of the water brake assembly. The water brake was used to control the rate of descent when rail cars moving down the slope were heavier than the weight of rail cars moving up the slope. Engine House No. 6 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as part of the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site.
