Bunker Hill Monument, Charlestown, Boston, Massachusetts. Built between 1825-1843, the monument was erected to commemorate the Battle of Bunker Hill, the first major conflict between the British and American forces in the Revolutionary War. Fought July 17, 1775 on nearby Breed's Hill, the battle was a defeat for the Patriots; however, the Americans were able to inflict significant losses on the attacking British military.
