Fort Matanzas as Seen from the South, with Visitors on Gundeck

Fort Matanzas as Seen from the South, with Visitors on Gundeck

This is a view of Fort Matanzas located on Rattlesnake Island as seen from the south, with visitors on the gundeck. The sentry box or garita is located at the southern corner of the fort and the cannons are pointing toward the Matanzas River Inlet. The sentry box was rebuilt of coquina stone in 1929 after having fallen into disrepair in the 1800s. Wooden stairs lead visitors to the gundeck. This fort is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as Fort Matanzas National Monument.
