Rope Running through a Roller above a Horizontal Sheave

This is the horizontal sheave, and the water brake, at Engine House Six. The water brake was used to control the rate of descent when rail cars moving down the slope were heavier than the weight of rail cars moving up the slope. Engine House No. 6 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as part of the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site.
