Haiku Movies

Students create a movie to illustrate an original haiku poem.

Objectives

  • Students will create an original haiku..
  • Students will videotape scenes in nature that reflect their original haiku.
  • Students will create an movie illustrating their original haiku.

Procedure

  • Discuss with students the requirements of a haiku poem – a three-line poem, the first line with five syllables, the second line with seven syllables, and the third line with five syllables. Explain that haiku often illustrates some aspect of nature or tranquility.
  • Have each student write at least two haiku poems.
  • Give students a video camera and have them videotape examples of nature that illustrate the nature of their poem.
  • Create a movie, complete with video, audio and text that complements their poem.

  • Mini Digital Video Cameras
  • Video Editing Program (iMovie)
  • Sounds of nature music to inspire and import

Alternatives/Extensions

  • Students may work individually or in groups.
  • Teachers may wish to incorporate this lesson into an interdisciplinary unit on Asian studies.
  • Completed films could be broadcast on the school's morning news show.
