Quadrant Analysis

Students create a slide show depicting items found in their one square meter quadrant.

Objectives

  • Students will use square meter quadrants to describe density, frequence and diversity of plants and animals on their school property.
  • Students will use multimedia to tell about events.
  • Students will graph items found to determine percentages.

Procedure

  • Introduce students to spreadsheet and presentation software.
  • Divide students into groups of four and assign each group a laptop and a digital camera.
  • Using one meter square quadrants, students examine a small section of their school campus.
  • Students take digital photos and use a spreadsheet program to describe and count the items in the quadrants.
  • Students use data and photos from their field experience to create a presentation which will include photos and a graph of items found in their quadrants.

Materials

  • Digital Cameras
  • Laptop Computers
  • Presentation software (Powerpoint or Keynote)
  • Spreadsheet software
  • Square meters (easily constructed with PVC)

Alternatives/Extensions

  • Combine all presentations and present at a family night.
  • Create videos of the process.
  • Use probes or microscopes to more closely examine findings.
