A Comparative Study Against Slavery

Students create a slide show or Inspiration diagram depicting the differences and similarities between slave treatment based on slave narratives.

Objectives

  • Students will gather evidence using archival documents to make influences and draw conclusions.
  • Students will use multimedia to compare and contrast .
  • Students will work collaboratively to present a final product.

Procedure

  • Groups of students will argue house slavery vs. field slavery using research gathered from archival documents.
  • Students will compare and contrast the lives of a house slave vs a field slave based on ex-slave narratives from the Federal Writers' Project.
  • Using Inspiration and/or presentation software, groups of students will present information regarding the treatment of slaves in Florida

Alternatives/Extensions

  • Have students debate treatment of house slaves vs. field slaves.
  • Using primary source documents, have students compare northern vs. southern slaves.
