Time Management

Students create an Inspiration diagram depicting an average day in their lives.

Objectives

  • Students will work collaboratively in pairs.
  • Students will collect and organize data from their time management logs.
  • Students will demonstrate a familiar daily process or procedure in a flow chart using Inspiration.
  • Students will construct a circle graph, using Microsoft Excel.
  • Students will prioritize findings and propose modifications in schedules to increase productivity and success in academic achievement.
     

Procedure

  • Students will record everything they do in a regular 24-hour school day in their Time Management Activity Log. 
  • Using Inspiration, students will demonstrate or diagram one of the processes recorded in the Time Management Activity Log.  Before giving the students time to work, the basic functions of Inspiration will be demonstrated.  .
  • Students will categorize their logs into major types of activities (eating, sleeping, school related functions, etc.), then use Excel to determine what percentage of their day they spend doing each type of activity. 
  • Students will construct a circle graph using Excel.  After creating the graphs, students will complete some critical thinking follow-up questions. .
  • Students will discuss ways in which these skills can be used to more effectively manage their school day and increase academic achievement.

Materials

  • Time Management Logs
  • Inspiration or Kidspiration software.
  • Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet software.
  • Mobile computer lab with printer

Alternatives/Extensions

  • Activity Extensions include transferring skills learned to other processes and procedures that relate to academic content area, i.e. mapping skills, planning steps for writing a persuasive essay, or organizing the process for a science fair project.
