How to make a Peanut Butter
and Jelly Sandwich

Make a movie which shows how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Objectives

  • Students will use clustering to organize ideas
  • Students will create a written draft using idea organizers
  • Students will respond and react to peer writing through questions, suggestions, or statements about the content or form of what was written.
  • Student will rewrite his rough draft incorporating changes
  • Student will demonstrate pre-writing and composition skills
  • Student will write and illustrate a story or poem.
  • Student will compose simple sets of instructions for simple tasks using a logical sequence of steps

Procedure

  • Children choose a "how to" activity to explain (such as peanut butter and jelly sandwich)
  • Students will use a web to show steps in the "how to" experience of making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
  • Student creates a rough draft.
  • Group partners will critique and advise.
  • Student will rewrite or reorganize.
  • Student goes through script choosing points at which illustrations would be good. Then draw a tiny square above the point where a picture is needed, preferably after the appropriate sentence(s), just to keep consistency (with i-Movie creation in mind).
  • Number all the little squares. These will in turn become the story board pictures, and the sentence that goes with each "square" is to be written under the storyboard picture
  • .Using a story-board guide, (simply a page with squares, under which are several, 5-6 lines to write on), student illustrates each chosen point above, writing script from draft below the picture, and numbering in the same sequence as the little "squares" on the draft.
  • Student will use a video camera and shoot the desired pictures.
  • Using a computer and editing program such as i-Movie, the student imports video and edits the clips, and puts in the sound to get a finished "Movie".
