Description: A map of the Western Hemisphere from 1892 showing European discoveries, exploration, and settlement in the Americas between 1491 and 1673. The focus of this map is the American Republic (North America), however it includes information of early exploration in the West Indies and South America. The map notes the exploration of the Norsemen to Vinland in AD 1000. The dates and points of exploration throughout the Americas are given for several explorers, from the voyages of Columbus to Bartholomew Gosnold in 1602. Territorial expansion by the British companies in North America is shown. Tables provide information about the American Republic from 1491 to 1886, and a list of six noted early explorers each from the countries of Spain, France, and England (including dates of exploration and country of origin in the case of Italian explorers). The upper table breaks the time periods of the American Republic into the period of discovery (1491-1606), settlement (1606-1673), wars (1673-1773), independence (1773-1789), constitution (1789-1845), dissension (1845-1860), secession (1860-1865), and peace (1865-1886).
