Pirate Map

Help students find their way around school by creating a map in AppleWorks that includes pictures of area landmarks.


  • Students will use simple maps to identify and locate places.
  • Students will explain how to get from one location to another by using a map of their school.


  • Create a map of your school in a draw program that shows key walkways and intersections.
  • Give students beginning and ending points and have them trace the route. This can be done with paper/pencil, or the students can draw lines in a template in a draw program.
  • After students draw the route, have them write or explain verbally how to get from place to place.
  • The students should use cardinal directions in their explanation. Use this lesson in conjunction with Cardinal Directions , and students can use their own compasses.

  • Use your map to route out a trip for a field trip.
  • Make a map of your school that shows pictures of key buildings, and use it for a scavenger hunt.
  • Instead of drawing a map, scan a map.
