European Newscast

Students will work collaboratively to learn about other cultures through internet research and then produce a newscast.

Objectives

  • To integrate technology classroom lessons and their social studies learning.
  • To learn about other cultures through internet research.
  • To have students work collaboratively and effectively in groups.
  • To understand the basic preparation/production of a newscast.

Procedure

  • Students were assigned groups and then they chose the European country that they wanted to do a newscast on.
  • Students were given laptops to research their country on-line. Students had to research three topics (weather, current events, on this day in History) and their three chosen topics (Sports, Cultural Holidays/Festivals, Entertainment etc.).
  • Students gathered all of their research and then prepared written news scripts including speaking roles for every group member.
  • We reviewed basic camera work (angles, lighting) with the class. They had learned this in their technology classes.
  • When the scripts were finalized, we filmed and produced the newscast in front of a classroom audience.
  • After the filming we viewed and critiqued the groups overall performance as a class.
