Veterans of Past American Wars Project

Students will understand the impact of war by interviewing a war veteran.

Objectives

  • Students will gain an understanding of the impact that war has had on the society, economy, family, individual and other aspects of life in American History.

Procedure

  • In groups of two, students will be assigned a U.S Military Veteran from a past war.
  • The students will be asked to research the specific war and time period in order to gain a better understanding prior to the interview. It is recommended that students use internet sites, text books, and other resources to better prepare themselves for the interview.
  • Students will come up with questions to ask the veteran during a 30-60 minute discussion. Topics should be related to the war but should focus on the veterans past experiences and recollections. The questions and answers from the interview will be typed and recorded.
  • The discussion should be recorded and students will be asked to individually write a reflection paper on the interview.
  • In pairs, students will complete the project by creating a Movie-Maker presentation on some aspect of the interview.
  • The completed work will be presented to the class at a later date.
