About Site Key

The following icons have been developed to give Clearinghouse users important information at a glance about the sites listed here.

Kid Friendly = Kid Friendly
This designation is used where appropriate in the elementary and middle school sections. Sites marked "KF" meet two conditions. First, the content of the site is appropriate for the grade level indicated. Second, the site itself is designed for students to use independently. The reviewer may take into account reading level, navigation, style or complexity of the page, and other factors necessary for students to be able to use the site without adult assistance. The lack of a "KF" icon does not mean the site is inappropriate for student use. Many sites listed here without the icon can be valuable classroom resources when used in a directed activity or with teacher assistance.

Ads or Commercial = Ads or .Com
The "AD" icon indicates that a site has advertising or is a commercial site. In general we have tried to avoid sites with excessive advertising when a non-commercial alternative exists. However, we have found it necessary to include a number of sites that display ads or even pop up windows. Teachers should discuss the advertising students may encounter when they use these sites. To their credit, several sites for students clearly label their advertising content. If you discover any site with inappropriate advertising, please email the project manager and we will immediately review the site.
We have also marked most .com sites with the "AD" icon. Even if there are not obvious ads on a site sponsored by a commercial entity, students should be reminded of possible bias in the information they may find there. Any site with a store or otherwise offering items for sale is marked "AD" even if the site sponsor is a non-profit institution. Many sites in the Clearinghouse bear the "AD" icon, but are extremely valuable sources of information and should not be overlooked just because of their commercial ties.

Florida Resource = Florida
The "FL" icon denotes either sites with specific Florida content or sites sponsored by Florida organizations. Many of these sites have been specifically developed with Florida's students and teachers in mind. For example, you may find that a site marked "FL" has activities correlated with the Sunshine State Standards.
