“Bombardment of Forts Jackson and St. Philip- the United States squadron, under Farragut, engaging the Confederate forts and fleet on its way to New Orleans, April 24th, 1862. The enemy’s losses: In addition to the loss of their forts- Jackson, St. Philip, Pike, Chalmette, etc.- eighteen of their gunboats were destroyed, three iron rams, several floating batteries, booms, torpedoes, etc. The famous Hollins’s ram Manassas was riddled, and, floating down a disabled wreck, it was destroyed by Porter’s mortar fleet."— Frank Leslie, 1896
