“Terrible effect of a discharge of grape from Fort Jackson on the Federal gunboat Iroquois, Captain de Camp, April 24th, 1862, which killed eight and wounded seven seamen, out of a dahlgren gun’s crew of twenty-five men, under Lieutenant McNair. One of the most terrible events of this desperate battle was the slaughter on board the gunboat Iroquois. In the midst of the engagement of the 24th of April, 1862, a discharge of grape from Fort Jackson killed eight and wounded seven, out of a gun’s crew of twenty-five men, at the same minute. A spectator of the horrible scene told our artist it was one of the most appalling things he had ever seen, but it only nerved the survivors to renewed exertions. Lieutenant McNair fought his gun with great gallantry, and was one of those who escaped."— Frank Leslie, 1896
