"The war in Virginia. A regiment of the Eighteenth Corps carrying a portion of Beauregard's line in front of Petersburg. The first line of Confederate works, on the right, was carried by Burnside's corps. Said an officer: 'It was now about five o'clock P. M. We opened our battery at once and commenced shelling the Confederate fort. In five minutes we had three wounded. We kept on firing for about half an hour, when our infantry- Griffin's brigade- made a charge and captured the fort, taking give guns and about 200 prisoners. We had, we found, dismounted the Confederate guns by our shells.'
