Nike Transitions

Use a Nike commercial to define transitions as used in movies and writing.

Objectives

  • Students will develop a definition of transitions by watching a movie and making their own.

Procedure

  • Watch the Nike movie with the class.
  • Lead students to notice transitions in movie without saying the word transition through open classroom dialogue.
  • Develop a definition of transition.
  • Watch a teacher-created movie and show the students how to add transitions.
  • Compare and contrast both movies.
  • Have students create a 3-clip iMovie using transitions.

  • iMovie
  • Teacher created movie without transitions
  • Clips for iMovie (scanner, web site, digital camera)
  • Teacher-created story

Alternatives/Extensions

  • At a later time, when the students need to develop a higher level understanding of transitions, go back and re watch the movie and pick out the finer points of the transition.
  • Read a story with good transitions and have students add transitions to a previous piece of writing.
  • Brainstorm a list of transitions to add to the class word wall.
