Poetry Podcast

Students produce iMovies to share their thoughts of friendship along with poetry creations. Tying up a year of hard work with a special memory project.

Objectives

  • Students will read for information to use in performing a task.
  • Student uses a variety of technological and information resources to gather and synthesize information to create and communicate knowledge.
  • Students will identify words, construct meaning using varied reading strategies.
  • Student uses a variety of strategies to prepare for writing. (graphical organizers, brainstorming, story boards)
  • Students will prepare for writing by focusing, organizing and identifying purpose.
  • Students will produce a piece of writing, poem that illustrates their feelings about friendship.
  • Student interacts with peers to in a variety of situations to develop and present familiar ideas.
  • Students express thoughts in a digital, organized manner.
  • Student responds critically to fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, etc.

Procedure

  • Have students write a poem about friendship using the Create a Poem site (https://ettcweb.lr.k12.nj.us/forms/newpoem.htm)
  • Using the school digital camera, show teacher and one student how to take a picture. They will take a few pictures teacher could limit to 3-4 each, then the student in turn teaches another student how to use the camera, after they take their 3-4 shots of friends, classmates, the student teaches another.. The class has the camera for 2 full days or longer if the teacher would like.
  • Next, the class forms movie crews of 4/5 students. Each crew comes to the media center to work with Ms. McGee on planning. The crews use Inspiration / Kidspiration storyboard and looks at the word Friendship from the perspective of all 5 senses.. They brainstorm some phrases that can be placed as titles and markers in the groups movie.
  • Then at another session the class returns to the Media and in their groups, students will work on creating their iMovie. Using the pictures, poems and songs gathered. Refer to Direction sheet given to each movie crew. Narrate just one of the poems selected by the movie crew.
  • Produce and edit using iMovie. Save movie to server. Save movie also as a quicktime file.
  • Present friendship movies to the class. Class will use a simple rubric to critique the group movies presented.
  • Quicktime movies can be burned on CD for students to take home.

Alternatives/Extensions

  • Using the senses storyboards to extend the activity to give the students voice in writing their own script /story of friendship
  • Use iPhoto to create a classroom yearbook using the pictures the students took.
  • Create different slide shows / in PowerPoint of 3rd grade memories.
  • Demonstrate burning the class collection of digital poems, podcasts and movies using iDVD.
