Description: "General Barlow, born in Brooklyn, N. Y., October 18th, 1834, was graduated at Harvard in 1855. In 1861 he enlisted as a private in the Twelfth Regiment, New York State National Guard, and went to the front of the first call for troops to defend the capital. At the end of the three months' term of service he had been promoted lieutenant. He at once re-entered the service as lieutenant colonel of the Sixty-first New York Volunteers, was promoted colonel during the siege of Yorktown, and distinguished himself at the battle of Fair Oaks, May 31st and June 1st, 1862, for which he was severely wounded and taken prisoner; but he was exchanged, and recovered in time to take the field again the following spring. He also participated inthe final campaigns of the Potomac Army under General Grant."— Frank Leslie, 1896
