Description: "The great Prison Pen at Andersonville, Ga. The stockade was orginally eleven acres, which was increased to fifteen on July 2nd, 1864, which made it one thousand six hundred yards around, with fifty-two posts, or sentry boxes, reached by steps from the outside. Parallel with the stockade, and twenty feet distant, was the dead line, which consisted of posts six inches thick, with a strip of scantling nailed on the top to form a rail."— Frank Leslie, 1896
