Description: The Battle of Belmont was fought on November 7, 1861 in Mississippi County, Missouri. This battle was the first combat test in the Civil War for General Ulysses S. Grant, the future Union Army general in chief and eventual U.S. president. The sketch shows the Confederate batteries on the bluff and at its base. The steamboats are drawn up against the western shore.
