Description: A world map from 1890 showing the major drainage basins of the earth, and prevailing wind patterns. This map is color-coded to show the drainage basins of the Atlantic, the Pacific and Mediterranean, the Arctic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, Baltic, and China Seas, the Indian Ocean and Hudson Bay, and inland basins with no outlet. Regions of prevailing winds are also color-coded to show the North-Easterly Winds, the Westerly Winds, the Trade Winds, the Monsoons, and the areas of constant calms. Wind directions are shown with straight arrows for prevailing wind directions and wavy arrows for seasonally alternating wind directions. The general track routes for West India hurricanes, Indian Ocean hurricanes, and China Seas typhoons. "The function of rivers is to drain the land. More water evaporates from the sea than from the land, but in proportion to its area more rain and snow fall on the land, especially on the mountains. More water falls upon the continents than is evaporated from them, and the surplus runs back to the sea in rivers. Most rivers must therefore empty their waters into the sea either directly or as tributaries to those which flow into the ocean."
