“An eel-like fish, Nemichthys scolopaceus; any member of the Nemichthyidae. The snipe eel attains a length of 3 feet; it is pale-colored above, the back somewhat speckled; the belly and anal fin are blackish. It is a deep-water fish of the Atlantic often taken off the Atlantic coast.” —Whitney, 1889
