Dressed in scarlet, and carrying the banner of the expedition, Columbus landed. He was followed by a priest with a cross and the men of the ships. All knelt upon the sandy shore and thanked God for his goodness. Then Columbus took possession of the land in the name of the sovereigns of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella.
