Chartres Cathedral, Ascension portal, angels and apostles
On the lintel of the Ascension portal, angels announce Jesus’ ascension into heaven to his apostles. You can see the virtuosity of the carving where the wonderfully detailed angels’ wings are cut almost completely free from the background – with only small struts left in place to prevent breakage.
