Chartres Cathedral, Ascension portal, archivolts, Capricorn, January, Libra and October Capricorn and Libra, January and October
On the right side of the Ascension portal, the lowest archivolts represent the zodiac signs, Capricorn, the goat, and Libra, a woman holding scales (now broken off). Below them, the two-faced Roman god, Janus, cuts bread at a table in an indoor setting – indicated by the architectural frame; for October, a man is likely harvesting acorns from a tree to feed pigs. On the adjacent lintel, angels announce Jesus’ Ascension to his apostles.
