Chartres Cathedral, Ascension portal, archivolts, September, Virgo, Sagitarius, Taurus, June and March
The archivolts of the Ascension portal represent a calendar in which signs of the zodiac alternate with figures of the labors of the months. At the crown of the arch, the outer figures represent the month of September (a man places grapes into a vat, while another man stomps them) and the zodiac signs, Virgo, the Virgin, and Sagittarius, the centaur with a bow. The inner figures show the zodiac sign, Taurus, the bull, and the months of June (a man mowing grain with a long scythe) and March (a hooded man pruning a vine).
