Chartres Cathedral, Ascension portal, capital frieze, Adoration of the Magi, the Magi before Herod, Annunciation to the Shepherds
On the right side of the Ascension portal, the narrative of Jesus’ infancy advances from the outside inward. On the outer capital, angels – badly damaged – announce Jesus’ birth to shepherds. Next, the magi – two of them now headless – inquire about Jesus’ birth with King Herod who is accompanied by two seated figures representing the Jewish priests or scribes. Beneath the lintel, the inner capital shows the three Magi, crowned as kings, bringing gifts to the child Jesus who sits upon Mary’s lap, with Joseph behind her.
