Chartres Cathedral, Ascension portal, capital frieze, the Magi before Herod, Annunciation to the Shepherds, Nativity, Visitation
On the right side of the Ascension portal, the narrative of Jesus’ infancy advances from the outside inward. The Nativity itself receives prominent placement on the broad capital between the Ascension portal and the central portal. To the right, the scene of the Visitation, Mary’s visit to her cousin, Elizabeth, mother of St. John the Baptist, is shown. The next two capitals on the Ascension portal represent the angels announcing Jesus’ birth to the shepherds and the Magi inquiring with King Herod and the Jewish authorities about the newborn child.
