Poreč, Cathedral of Eufrasius, apse mosaic, center, enthroned Virgin and Child
The enthroned Virgin and Child at the center of the composition emphasizes the human nature of Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary – a theme stressed by the choice of the scenes of the Annunciation and the Visitation for the lower walls of the apse. The design of the Virgin’s footstool differs from the symmetrical frontal perspective recorded in 18th and 19th century engravings and drawings, and much of the throne and footstool is the work of the restoration undertaken in the 1890s (Terry and Maguire [2007], pp. 13-15, 46-48).
