San Vicente de Ávila, Shrine of Sts. Vincent, Sabina and Cristeta, south side, martyrdom of the saints

San Vicente de Ávila, Shrine of Sts. Vincent, Sabina and Cristeta, south side, martyrdom of the saints

The five scenes on the south side of the shrine depict the torture and martyrdom of St. Vincent and his sisters, Sts. Sabina and Cristeta, and the miraculous events that, according to the saints’ legends, led to the building of their tombs. After the saints’ bones had been broken, the third scene shows how their heads were crushed between wooden beams, pressed down by heavy stones. Above, angels lift the souls of the three martyrs to heaven, as they are blessed by the hand of God. Their bodies were left unburied, but, according to the saints’ legends, God sent a serpent to protect the corpses. A Jew passed by and was drawn to the site by curiosity. The serpent coiled around him and he was only freed when he was inspired to call upon Christ for aid. After this miracle – the subject of the fourth scene – the Jew sought baptism and built tombs for the saints. D'Emilio photo archive no. b19800112u (13.06.21/JD)
