Santiago cathedral, Pórtico da Gloria, St. John the Baptist
In the Pórtico da Gloria, St. John the Baptist holds and points to a roundel with the Lamb of God and a cross. This alludes to his greeting of Jesus in John’s Gospel (1: 29): “Behold the Lamb of God which takes away the sin of the world.” The figures of prophets in the Pórtico announcing the Messiah are linked with the medieval liturgical drama, the Ordo Prophetarum, in which a procession of prophets recited their prophecies of Jesus’ coming. The column statue of St. John the Baptist is on the west side of the Pórtico, on the inner face of the west facade, on the south side of the central doorway. Above him, to the left, demons torture one of the souls in hell.
