This scene of the Last Supper is the work of the early twelfth-century artist responsible for most of the scenes of the life of Jesus on the left door. In it, Jesus sits among seven of his disciples, while Judas – who will soon leave to betray him – is isolated on the far side of the table with his back to the viewers. The scene follows the description in John 13:21-30. After Jesus announces that one of the disciples will betray him, “the disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was lying close to the breast of Jesus...” We see the apostles at the right looking at one another with gestures that suggest speech and surprise; St. John leans his head upon Jesus’ breast. In John’s Gospel, Jesus responds to the apostles’ questions by identifying his betrayer as the one “to whom I shall give this morsel when I have dipped it.” On the panel, Jesus extends his hand with the morsel of bread towards Judas.
