These stacked stones, or cairns, are often called ducks. Ducks are used to mark backcountry hiking trails, to point hikers in a particular direction. These ducks have been erected near Mirror Lake. As a general rule, ducks should not be erected frivolously, even along backcountry trails. This picture gives an idea of the visual impact that is created when many successive visitors decide to contribute their own stack of rocks to the scene.Galleries:Yosemite National ParkKeywords:cairns, mirror lake, rock ducks, trail markers, yosemite national park, yosemite valleyPhoto Location: Yosemite National Park, CaliforniaPhotographer: Dr. Roy WinkelmanDate of Photo: 07/10/2011Device Make: CanonDevice Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark IIOriginal Dimensions: 3744×5616Picture Orientation: PortraitGPS Coordinates: 37°44'36.00"N 119°34'33.00"WPicture Number: 12882
