A Wind Damaged Red Cedar Tree at Fort Matanzas

A Wind Damaged Red Cedar Tree at Fort Matanzas

In the distance, there is a red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) tree that has been blown over, in high winds. The roots of the tree are exposed. This red cedar tree is likely hundreds of years old; it may survive from 1740 when construction on Fort Matanzas began.
