Bilge Pumps on the Gun Deck

Bilge Pumps on the Gun Deck

These are four of the chain pumps, on the gun deck, of the USS Constitution. The black, metal framework is part of the pumping mechanism. It appears that the handles of the pump could be folded over when the pump was not in use. This pump was used to raise water from a cistern on the orlop deck.
