Black Bead Branches

Black Bead Branches

Pithecellobium kevense. A shrub or low spreading tree, black bead is common in the hammock understory and margins. The fragrant flowers produce a pod that splits open, displaying hard black seeds against a soft red aril. The conspicuous color apparently attracts birds and raccoons that disperse the seeds.
