Pithecellobium kevense. A shrub or low spreading tree, black bead is common in the hammock understory and margins. The fragrant flowers produce a pod that splits open, displaying hard black seeds against a soft red aril. The conspicuous color apparently attracts birds and raccoons that disperse the seeds.Galleries:Blackbead Trees, Monroe, WetlandsKeywords:Botanical, Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, FL, Key Largo, Keys, black bead, hammock, island, leaf, plantsPhoto Location: Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, Key Largo, FloridaPhotographer: Gordon WorleyDate of Photo: 10/27/2010Device Make: NIKON CORPORATIONDevice Model: NIKON D50Exposure Time: 0.5F Number: 11Original Dimensions: 2000×3008Picture Orientation: PortraitGPS Coordinates: 25°10'33.71"N 80°22'10.21"WPicture Number: 21845
