Chartres Cathedral, Ascension portal, capital frieze and archivolts, Massacre of the Innocents, July, April
The lower left figures in the archivolts depict the months of July – a man cutting grain – and April – a man with a flowery crown and a blossoming tree. The capital frieze shows an extended scene of the Massacre of the Innocents. King Herod is prominently displayed on the outer face of the inner capital. He is crowned, sits crosslegged and holds a sword upright in his right hand. On the lintel, the apostles form part of the scene of the Ascension of Christ in the tympanum.
