This picture gives a close-up view of the coquina that composes the Castillo de San Marcos. The coquina walls received numerous firings from cannonballs without shattering due to the rock's physical structure; the coquina contains many tiny air pockets, which made the walls compressible and therefore resistant to shattering.Galleries:Castillo de San Marcos, Rock Specimens, St. JohnsKeywords:castillo de san marcos, close-up, coquina, florida, fort marion, national park service, st. augustine, u.s. national monument, u.s. national register of historic placesPhoto Location: Castillo de San Marcos, St. Augustine, FloridaPhotographer: Dr. Roy WinkelmanDate of Photo: 12/18/2013Device Make: CanonDevice Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark IIExposure Time: 0.025F Number: 22Original Dimensions: 5616×3744Picture Orientation: LandscapeGPS Coordinates: 29°53′52″N 81°18′41″WPicture Number: 25628
