Gunner View of Matanzas Inlet and Cannon in the Light of Late Afternoon
An artillery gunner would have seen a view much like this when manning the weapon. The 6-pound cannon and wooden carriage sits atop the battlements prepared to defend the Matanzas inlet from the sea. The cannon is a modern reproduction named "El Paco" and was dedicated in 1998 in memory of Frank Suddeth. This dramatic photo shows the long shadows cast by the afternoon sun, and the deep blue water as seen in the early evening light. The fort is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as Fort Matanzas National Monument.Galleries:Cannon, Fort Matanzas, Forts and Fortifications, St. JohnsKeywords:Fort Matanzas National Park, Forts, National Monument, Saint Augustine, Spanish fort, St. AugustinePhoto Location: Fort Matanzas National Monument, St. Johns County, FloridaPhotographer: Dr. Roy WinkelmanDate of Photo: 12/17/2013Device Make: CanonDevice Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark IIExposure Time: 0.04F Number: 22Original Dimensions: 5616×3744Picture Orientation: LandscapeGPS Coordinates: 29°42′55″N 81°14′21″WPicture Number: 26696
