Marlberry (Ardisia escallonioides) Center Stalk Branches
The name of this understory shrub is probably a contraction of "marbleberry". Though the fruits are edible, they are not very "eatable". The Mikasuki Indians reportedly preferred the leaves, which they mixed with tobacco for smoking.Galleries:Marlberries, Monroe, WetlandsKeywords:Botanical, FL, Key Largo, Keys, Mikasuki Indians, hammock, island, leaves, marlberry, plants, shrubPhoto Location: Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, Key Largo, FloridaPhotographer: Gordon WorleyDate of Photo: 10/27/2010Device Make: NIKON CORPORATIONDevice Model: NIKON D50Exposure Time: 2F Number: 11Original Dimensions: 2000×3008Picture Orientation: PortraitGPS Coordinates: 25°10'33.71"N 80°22'10.21"WPicture Number: 21846
