Museum signage: Effigies of various familiar animals were found at Las Humanas. Almost all were carved simply; many were also painted. This large mountain lion, for example, was carved from a light olive-colored sandstone. A small drilled hole between the ears might have held a jeweled inlay. But this mountain lion, like the other effigies found here, does not reveal what it meant to the people of Las Humanas.Galleries:Ceramic Arts, Free-Standing Sculpture, Salinas Pottery and Other ArtifactsKeywords:Gran Quivira, Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument, carving, effigy, lion, mountain lion, sandstonePhoto Location: Gran Quivira Contact Station Exhibit, Pueblo Missions National Monument, New MexicoPhotographer: Dr. Roy WinkelmanDate of Photo: 02/19/2014Device Make: CanonDevice Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark IIExposure Time: 0.125F Number: 10Original Dimensions: 3744×3757Picture Orientation: PortraitGPS Coordinates: 34°35'45.05"N 106°17'45.88"WPicture Number: 26181
