Prickly Pear Cactus Along the Chihuanhuan Desert Trail of Big Bend National Park

This photo shows a prickly pear cactus and was taken along the Chihuanhuan Desert Trail of Big Bend National Park. Prickly pear pads host the larva of a scale insect which produces a dye called cochineal when crushed; this dye was used by the Aztecs to paint temples.
