Rome, Santa Prassede, apse mosaic, overview, Christ and saints

Santa Prassede was built and decorated under Pope Paschal I (817-824). In the apse mosaic, one sees (from left to right), Pope Paschal I presenting a model of the church; St. Paul presenting one of the two patron saints (St. Praxedis or her sister, Pudentiana); Christ standing in glory above the Jordan river, being crowned by a hand descending from heaven; St. Peter presenting the other patron saint; and St. Zeno, a Roman priest and martyr.
